Prosecutors will soon take over a two-and-a-half year investigation into a December 2021 officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a man in Algona, near Auburn.
According to an updated news release on March 28, 2024, from the Independent Force Investigation Team of King County, a multi-agency team of investigators from 13 King County police departments, the team has received lab results back from the Washington State Patrol regarding the shooting and is preparing a report to send to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Sgt. Eric White, public information officer for the investigative team, declined to comment regarding the lab test results.
According to a previous release from the team on Aug. 10, 2022, the team planned to transfer the case to prosecutors upon the receipt of lab test results.
According to the team’s initial release, two Valley SWAT members shot and struck the suspect in a domestic violence-hostage call.
According to the release, Algona police responded after receiving a report of a domestic violence-hostage situation in the 200 block of Algona Boulevard South at about 1 p.m. Dec. 27, 2021.
The Kent Reporter previously reported that Algona Police officers were headed into a reported domestic violence situation with an “armed and suicidal” subject with a court-issued no-contact order against him.
Officers arrived and attempted to contact one of the hostages and the suspect fired at police, according to the release. Officers retreated and called for backup and SWAT and set up a perimeter. The SWAT team rescued three hostages prior to encountering the suspect, with two Valley SWAT members firing weapons and striking the suspect.
According to the news release, the suspect died and no injuries resulted to anyone else in the incident.
