Winners of this year’s Miss Auburn Scholarship Program recently made the trip to Olympia to visit the Capitol campus as guests of Sen. Joe Fain, R-Auburn.
Miss Auburn Heather Haggin and Miss Auburn’s Outstanding Teen Elizabeth Enz maintained a recent tradition of heading to Olympia to learn more about state government and represent the Auburn community.
“It was an amazing opportunity to visit our state capitol,” said Haggin, who attends Green River College and is a graduate of Kentwood High School. She participated on a platform of fighting childhood obesity through movement and dance. “I had not been here since fourth grade, so to visit once I better understand what is going on is a whole different story. We’re very privileged to be here today.”
The Miss Auburn Scholarship Program is the largest community scholarship competition of its kind in the state.
“I definitely gained more experience coming to the Capitol than I did in fourth grade,” said Enz, who attends Auburn Mountainview High School and competed on a platform of preparing America’s youth for a financially fit future. “It was an amazing experience.”
Haggin and Enz automatically qualify for the Miss Washington Program later this year. The Miss Auburn program, sponsored by the Auburn Noon Lions Club, is an official preliminary to the Miss Washington and Miss America scholarship program.
“Our local scholarship program provides a great opportunity for young women to engage in civics, practice public speaking and foster relationships with other extraordinary young people in our community,” said Fain, who previously served as a judge for the competition.
