A 63-year-old son fatally shot his 86-year-old mother and then himself in the yard of a home in Des Moines near Fourth Avenue South and South 213th Street.

Paula W. Hudson died from a handgun wound to the head, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, which ruled her death a homicide. Michael K. Hudson, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Both died on Tuesday.

Des Moines Police responded at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to the home, according to a Des Moines Police media release. A family associate was checking on the home and called 911 to report a shooting.

Officers found Paula Hudson and her son dead in the yard. A suicide note was located. A handgun was found in the hand of the son. Investigators are treating the case as a murder-suicide.

“This is an isolated incident specific to this family and this residence,” according to the news release. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their family and friends.”

Des Moines Police Cmdr. Mike Graddon said in an email it was unknown if they each lived at the home.
