Street racing leads to chase with police in Kent – Police Blotter

CAR PURSUIT

Kent Police arrested a 19-year-old Kent man for investigation of attempting to elude an officer after a car chase that reached speeds of more than 90 mph at about 2:42 a.m. Jan. 10 northbound along the West Valley Highway between South 190th Street and South 180th Street.

Police received a call of about 100 vehicles involved in illegal street racing near the 6800 block of South 190th Street, according to the police report.

When police arrived at South 190th Street, several vehicles were lined up to race but then the drivers dispersed in their cars when they saw the police cars.

An officer saw a silver Honda Civic approaching another vehicle at speeds of about 50 mph in a posted 35 mph zone eastbound on South 190th. The officer was headed westbound, but made a u-turn and activated his lights and siren to pursue the Honda.

The Honda spun out briefly near the West Valley Highway and then headed northbound on the West Valley. The officer reported that the Honda reached speeds of up to 90 mph during about a 1-mile chase along the highway.

The officer stopped the chase after the Honda reportedly ran a red light at the South 180th Street, a major intersection along the West Valley Highway. The officer noted that the reckless driving by the Honda driver made a pursuit too dangerous.

About 30 minutes later, Tukwila Police reported to Kent Police that they found the Honda crashed into a barrier near a business park in the 17600 block of the West Valley Highway. The car had front-end damage and could not be driven. They also found the driver, who was not injured, at the scene.

The driver told Kent Police he was in the Kent industrial area to race. He said he did not pull over for the police car because he did not want to go to jail and he didn’t want his car impounded for illegal street racing.

Police transported the man to the city jail and impounded his vehicle.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF

A 20-year-old Kent woman reportedly kicked an apartment bathroom door in half after becoming upset that her boyfriend was breaking up with her.

Police arrested the woman for investigation of malicious mischief in connection with the incident at about 2:10 a.m. Jan. 10 at an apartment in the 25800 block of 113th Avenue Southeast, according to the police report.

Officers showed up at the apartment complex to investigate a noise complaint of people running up and down a second-floor hallway.

Police found the woman screaming and crying outside of an apartment. Officers also noted that the woman was extremely intoxicated.

When officers asked the woman if she had been drinking, she told them it was none of their business. The woman stood up, clenched her fists and stared at the officers. She refused to sit down when ordered by the officers. The woman then moved toward the officers.

It took two officers to control the woman and place handcuffs on her.

The 19-year-old boyfriend of the woman told police that they had dated about three years and she lived with him, but she was supposed to move out the next day.

The couple argued about the breakup when the woman then locked herself in a bathroom. She began to kick the door, sending pieces of the door into the hallway before the door broke in half. When an officer asked the woman if she wanted to tell her side of the story, she did not answer.

THEFT

A 25-year-old man told police he took food items Jan. 8 from a store in the 10200 block of Southeast 240th Street because he was hungry.

Police arrested the man for investigation of theft after he reportedly placed several food items in a backpack and walked out of the store with no attempt to pay for the items, according to the police report.

Store employees notified security personnel that the man was in the store because he had taken items from the store in the past.

A security employee watched the man take items from store shelves and leave without paying. Security stopped the man in the parking lot and brought him inside the store before they called police.
