Garbage, recycling and yard waste services in Kent are not impacted by the Waste Management drivers’ strike.

Republic Services, also known as Allied Waste, serves Kent residents and businesses through a contract with the city of Kent.

Republic Services in June ratified a five-year agreement with Teamsters Local 117 on a new contract for drivers.

Local news reports of Waste Management’s negotiations with Local 117 have generated a few calls to Republic’s customer service centers in the Puget Sound area, according to a company media release.

Mike Huycke, Republic’s Northwest Area president, assures customers that Republic and Local 117 successfully reached an agreement in June and did not expect any impacts to its customers due to on-going negotiations elsewhere.

“You may have seen media coverage about a disruption in the collection of recyclables and waste,” Huycke said. “To be clear, this is due to negotiations between the Teamsters and one of our competitors and there is no reason to believe Republic’s customers will be impacted by this situation.”

Allied Waste and the city of Kent signed a new seven-year contract that started in April 2011 for Allied to provide garbage and recycling services to residents and commercial customers.
