As a part of Green River College’s 50th anniversary celebration, the campus community gathered Thursday to look back on the college’s past.
Ridwan Ibrahim, Green River’s Associated Student Body president, opened a time capsule from the college’s 25th anniversary, the 1990-1991 school year. The capsule contained a video tape (which student government officials planned to watch later); copies of the college’s student newspaper, The Current; a faculty directory, which included instructors who still work at the college; a course list and a cafeteria menu with the most expensive item costing less than $3.
The contents of the time capsule will be on display in the Student Life office for a few weeks. Students plan to put the artifacts, along with items to mark the 50th anniversary, in a new time capsule set to be opened for the college’s 100th anniversary.
College President Eileen Ely and Mel Lindbloom, the college’s first president, assisted two U.S. Marines in a flag presentation on Thursday. The flag was hoisted up the college’s first flagpole – which was relocated to the entrance to the Mel Lindbloom Student Union that opened in February on the main campus in Auburn.
Following the event, the college hosted its eighth annual challenge coin ceremony, which honors veterans, who attend or work at the college. Each veteran received a challenge coin, which is a military tradition. This year’s coin was specially designed for the college’s 50th anniversary.
Green River’s 50th commencement ceremony on June 10 at the ShoWare Center in Kent wraps up the anniversary celebration.
