Landon Bow made 24 saves and Mathew Barzal had two goals as the Seattle Thunderbirds shut out the Everett Silvertips 2-0 in front of 5,586 at the ShoWare Center on Saturday night.
The T-Birds improve to 35-23-3-0, three points behind the Silvertips for first place in the U.S. Division.
The T-Birds and Silvertips will meet two more times this season, next Friday in Everett and March 11 at the ShoWare Center.
Bow (18-20-4-0) made seven saves in the first period, 10 saves in the second period and seven saves in the third period for his sixth shutout – four with the T-Birds – this season.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead at 15:56 of the first period. Ryan Gropp poked the puck up the left boards to Barzal, who skated into the Everett zone and then cut right into the slot. An Everett defenseman went down to block a shot, Barzal skated around him and then rifled a wrist shot over Everett goalie Carter Hart’s blocker. Brandon Schuldhaus had the second assist on the goal.
Everett (35-21-4-2) outshot Seattle 7-5 in the first period.
A Gropp wrist shot hit Hart up high early in the second period. The goalie fell to the ice and the Everett trainer came out on the ice. Hart left the game 1:07 into period and was replaced by Mario Petit. He returned to the ice after media timeout midway through the period. Petit played 9:21 and did not face a shot.
The Silvertips outshot the T-Birds 10-7 in the second period and led 17-12 in shots after two periods.
The T-Birds had to kill off back-to-back penalties to Scott Eansor with eight minutes left in the game. The T-Birds killed of all six Silvertips’ power plays in the game.
Barzal secured the win with an empty-net goal at 19:11 of the third. Donovan Neuls had the only assist on the goal.
Hart played 49:38 and had 19 saves on 20 shots. His record is now 33-20-1-2.
On the road
The T-Birds travel to Kamloops on Sunday to take on the Blazers at 6 p.m.
