T-Birds tumble to Chiefs, 2-1

Adam Helewka scored two goals for the Spokane Chiefs on Friday night to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

Adam Helewka scored two goals for the Spokane Chiefs on Friday night to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

The loss snaps the T-Birds three-game win streak. The T-Birds face the Portland Winterhawks at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Rose Garden.

Seattle (5-4-0-0) took a 1-0 lead at 6:24 of the first period on a power-play goal from Branden Troock. Brendan Rouse had the puck in the right circle and he centered it to Roberts Lipsbergs in the high slot. Lipsbergs snapped the puck at Spokane goalie Eric Williams with Troock on top of the crease. Williams made the save but Troock banged home the rebound for his second goal of the season.

Spokane outshot Seattle 10-6 in the first period.

Spokane (7-3-0-0) tied the game 1-1 at 17:37 of the second period on a goal from Adam Helewka. Riley Whittingham was credited with the only assist on the goal.

After two periods the Chiefs held a 21-10 advantage in shots on goal.

The Chiefs went in front 2-1 at 9:17 of the third period on Helewka’s second goal of the game. Cole Wedman and Mitch Holmberg had the assists.

Spokane outshot Seattle 15-5 in the third period and 36-15 in the game.

Seattle goalie Justin Myles stopped 34 of 36 shots and his record is now 0-2-0-0.

Williams made 14 saves on 15 shots and his record is now 6-2-0-0.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2012-13 season are available online at the T-Birds websiteand at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.

T-Birds season tickets are on sale. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
