A three-vehicle crash Monday night on Pacific Highway in Kent critically injured a 29-year-old Kent man and led to the foot chase and arrest of another man.
Kyoo Kim, of Kent, remained in critical condition with undisclosed injuries, as of noon Tuesday, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Paul Petersen, Kent Police spokesman.
Police arrested one of the drivers, a 24-year-old man, address unknown, for investigation of vehicular assault. There is an indication that the 24-year-old man had been drinking alcohol, Petersen said.
Police plan to forward the investigation to the King County Prosecutor’s Office later this week.
At 10:18 p.m. Monday, Kent Police, Kent Fire, South King Fire and Rescue, and King County Medic One responded to a report of a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of South 260 Street and Pacific Highway South.
When the first police units arrived, they found a high speed T-bone crash between two vehicles. One of the two vehicles, a silver, 2000 Nissan pickup, driven by the 24-year-old man, was northbound on Pacific Highway when it reportedly struck a 2008 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Kim, in the driver-side door. Kim’s vehicle was westbound on South 260th Street.
The impact of the crash knocked the Sonata into a third vehicle, a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a Puyallup woman. She was not injured. There was only one person in each vehicle.
The driver of the pickup fled the scene. Police caught the man in the back yard of a nearby mobile home after a resident called 911 to report a man in his yard. The pickup driver was not injured. He was in custody Tuesday at the Kent city jail.
Police said the pickup was registered to a Tacoma resident. They were unsure of the connection between the owner of the pickup and the driver, who only had identification from Mexico.
The pickup caught fire as a result of the crash but was extinguished by firefighters.
Pacific Highway was closed in the northbound direction for several hours while police conducted their investigation.
