Three to contend for Kent’s Miss Cornucopia title

Kelli Sheldon, Danielle Taylor and Tina Chen are the finalists for the 2011 Miss Cornucopia title at the Kent Cornucopia Days July 7-10 in downtown Kent.

Mayor Suzette Cooke will announce and crown the new Miss Cornucopia at 2 p.m. Friday, July 8 at the festival’s Plaza Stage in Town Square Plaza at the corner of Second Avenue and West Smith Street.

The candidates are:

• Kelli Sheldon, 18, a 2011 Kentridge High School graduate and the daughter of Craig and Margene Sheldon. She plans to attend either the University of Washington or Western Washington University and major in marine wildlife conservation. She is a square dancer, played in the school band and participated in solo and ensemble competitions. She volunteers at Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter based in Arlington.

• Danielle (DJ) Taylor, 19, a 2009 Kentwood High School graduate, 2011 Green River Community College graduate and the daughter of Andy and Julie Taylor. She plans to pursue a nursing degree at the UW or Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma). She volunteers at Auburn Regional Medical Center and works at a child developmental center. She wants to specialize in labor and delivery and neonatal intensive care.

• Tina Chen, 18, is a 2009 Kent-Meridian High graduate and attends the UW, majoring in economics. She is the daughter of Sean and Claire Hu. She plans to enter the Peace Corps and then go to graduate school for public administration. She helped organize a disaster relief concert for Haiti and volunteers with the city of Kent Neighborhood Program, Kent4health and as a reading and math tutor.

The winner of Miss Cornucopia receives a $3,000 college scholarship.
