Extra DUI patrols will be out in King County during Super Bowl weekend, Feb. 6-8.
King County is deploying extra patrols to reinforce traffic safety and deter motorists from driving under the influence, according to a Feb. 3 King County Target Zero Coalition media release.
Roadways typically see an increase in collisions and impaired drivers during Super Bowl weekend – and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 45% of all fatal crashes on Super Bowl Sunday in 2022 involved alcohol, according to the release.
This year’s Super Bowl features the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8 from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
These patrols will be active from Feb. 6-8 as part of the annual “Night of 1,000 Stars” campaign. This year’s efforts are dedicated to the memory of Washington State Patrol Trooper Christopher Gadd, who was killed by an impaired driver while on duty in March 2024. Gadd graduated from Kentlake High School, part of the Kent School District.
High Visibility Enforcement patrols also will monitor motorists who are speeding or driving while distracted.
The extra patrols are partially funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and coordinated by the King County Target Zero Coalition, which brings together law enforcement, public health, transportation, and community partners.
The King County Target Zero Coalition encourages motorists to call 911 and report someone who is driving impaired, or if they observe someone swerving in and out of their lane and driving erratically. This can include speeding, braking suddenly or inappropriately or making wide turns.
