Collisions on Sunday and Monday, March 5-6

One man died and four others were injured in two separate collisions on Sunday and Monday, March 5-6 on Interstate 5 in Federal Way.

Two injured

A 37-year-old Maple Valley man and 45-year-old SeaTac man were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on March 5 after a two-vehicle collision at approximately 7:25 a.m. on I-5.

According to a news release from the Washington State Patrol, the 37-year-old man, driving southbound and approaching South 336th Street, reportedly lost control and crossed the median, jumping the guardrail into the northbound I-5 lanes.

The 45-year-old man, driving in the northbound lane, attempted to swerve to avoid the airborne vehicle, according to the news release. The vehicles collided, totaling both vehicles, and came to a rest in lanes two and three.

The crash resulted in a 2 hours, 55 minutes closure of the roadway. Investigation regarding the cause of the crash continues.

Man dies, two injured

Tysen Blodgett, a 41-year-old Puyallup man, died as a result of injuries sustained in a four-vehicle collision on March 6 at approximately 5:20 a.m. on I-5.

Blodgett was transported to Harborview Medical Center following the crash and later died at the hospital, according to a March 7 State Patrol news release.

While traveling southbound on I-5 approaching South 320th Street, Blodgett’s vehicle reportedly lost control on the icy roadway, according to the State Patrol. The vehicle swerved to the right and struck a concrete jersey barrier.

A second and third vehicle struck the man’s vehicle, with his vehicle coming to a rest in the third lane of five, where it was struck a final time by a fourth vehicle, according to the State Patrol.

A 59-year-old California man was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for injuries related to the crash. The two other drivers involved in the collision were uninjured.

The freeway was closed for 3 hours, 30 minutes after the crash, according to the State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.
