Vehicle driving wrong way in Renton on SR 167 ends in fatal collision

34-year-old driver dies after he crashed into semi at about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 18 near South 180th Street

A 34-year-old man was killed following a wrong-way collision Feb. 18 on State Route 167 at South 180th Street in Renton, just south of Interstate 405.

Pedro Adan Sandoval died of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Feb. 19 King County Medical Examiner’s Office report. He died at the scene.

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson, right before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, northbound SR 167 was closed at 180th Street because of a fatal collision. Johnson said a mid-size SUV Cadillac SXT, driven by Sandoval, was going the wrong way southbound in the northbound lanes and struck a semi-truck.

Johnson said it is unknown if Sandoval was impaired. Johnson said there is no information about why the driver was going the wrong way. Sandoval was alone in the SUV.

Johnson said the semi-truck driver was injured with a broken leg and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The semi-driver was a 24-year-old man from Fremont, California, who was not wearing his seatbelt, according to a State Patrol press memo.

The roadway was blocked for six hours and 37 minutes, the State Patrol reported.
