It’s early in the season, but the Kent-Meridian boys basketball team certainly picked up a big win on Tuesday.
Point guard D’juan Miller led four Royals in double figures scoring, pouring in 17 points, leading Kent-Meridian past Thomas Jefferson 73-65 in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.
Jefferson (1-1 in league, 3-1 overall) entered the game ranked in one state top-10 poll and already had knocked off Auburn and eighth-ranked Beamer this season.
Tuesday night, however, Kent-Meridian’s depth proved too much.
“It was a big win for us. We came in with the mindset that we could beat them,” said K-M coach Brian Lockhart. “I thought we had great balance with four starters in double figures.
After Miller, Barenton Ahmed added 13 points for the Royals while Jordan Thompson Walker chipped in 12 and Sergio Arroyo collected 11.
Kent-Meridian (1-1, 1-1) won just one game in league last season.
Jefferson surged with a 25-point fourth quarter, but were matched by a 25-point outburst by the Royals.
“D’juan had an outstanding floor game, particularly in the fourth quarter,” Lockhart said. “He had big steals, clutch finishes, and a huge blocked shot on a lay up.”
