The bright lights shined on the Kentwood High boys basketball team Tuesday night in a nationally televised game against Oregon powerhouse Jefferson.
In a game that featured two of the nation’s top-ranked recruits in Kentwood’s Josh Smith and Jefferson’s Terrence Jones, it was the Democrats who scratched out a narrow 42-39 win in a game that was shown live on ESPN2.
Jones, the 13th ranked recruit in the nation, led the way with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Smith, a 6-9 UCLA-bound center, held his own in a low-scoring affair, delivering a team-high nine points, but adding a season-high nine blocks and 11 rebounds.
Down 40-39 late in the fourth quarter, the Conquerors (9-5 in league, 9-9 overall) had a chance to go ahead, but couldn’t convert.
Jason Boyce added eight points for Kentwood and Tre Tyler chipped in seven.
Kentwood will wrap up the regular season on Friday at Kentlake.
