The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 9-2 in a Western Hockey League game Saturday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
The T-Birds’ next game is Friday, December 15, against the Prince George Cougars at 7:35 p.m. at the accesso ShoWare Center.
Seattle (13-14-3-1) took a 1-0 lead at 13:44 of the first period on a power-play goal by Jarret Tyszka. Donovan Neuls entered the Chiefs zone at center ice and he passed the puck to Zack Andrusiak in the right circle. Andrusiak found Tyszka at the left point. Tyszka took a wrist shot with Nolan Volcan screening Spokane goalie Donovan Buskey and beat the goalie on the stick side.
Spokane (16-11-1-2) tied the game 1-1 at 14:37 of the first on a scramble goal by Jaret Anderson-Dolan. Nolan Reid had the only assist on the goal.
Spokane scored two goals 20 seconds apart in the first five minutes of the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Jake McGrew scored at 4:25 and Tyson Helgesen scored at 4:45.
The Chiefs made it 5-1 with a goal by Zack Fischer at 14:01 and Milos Farfak at 16:01.
Matt Berlin replaced Dorrin Luding in Seattle’s net after the Chiefs fourth goal. Luding had 19 saves on 23 shots.
Spokane had a 26-12 advantage in shots after two periods.
Anderson-Dolan scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 5:09 of the third period give the Chiefs a 6-1 lead. Fischer made it 7-1 at 9:08 of the third with his second goal of the game.
Farfak scored at 13:09 and 13:23 of the third to give the Chiefs a 9-1 lead.
Reece Harsch scored the T-Birds second goal at 16:05 of the third on a slap shot on the power play. Turner Ottenbreit had the only assist.
Spokane outshot Seattle 40-19 in the game.
Berlin had 12 saves on 17 shots.
Buskey made 17 saves on 19 shots.
