The speedy gelding Making Fire held off the closers for a three-quarter-length victory in Saturday’s featured event for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs.
With Juan Gutierrez up for his second win on the card, Making Fire ran six furlongs in 1 minute, 09.97 seconds on a fast track and paid $18.80, $11.80 and $4.20. Bill Tollett is the trainer for owner-breeder Petra Lewin of Olympia, Wash.
Gotta Get Even, a 26-to-1 long shot ridden by Joe Crispin, rallied for second place and paid $17.60 and $7.
It was another three-quarters of a length back to third-place finisher Farm Crew, ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, and a $4.40 show payoff.
Victriolic, Camp Pendleton, Hillbilly Cadillac, Evil Urges, Lake Sawyer and Old West completed the order of finish. The 13-10 betting favorite, Lake Sawyer lagged far back early and failed to make a serious threat.
Hustled to the lead, Making Fire set fractions of :22.30, :45.26 and :57.28 en route to the victory. The Washington-bred son of Makors Mark has won two straight and is 2-1-1 in five career starts.
NOTES: Jockey Leonel Camacho rode three more winners to make it eight victories in the last three riding days for the 27-year-old native of Zacatecas, Mexico. The $40,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic is the day’s richest race with Newfound Man at 2-1 on the morning line, followed by He’s All Heart at 5-2, Aaron the Baron at 3-1, Wasserman at 7-2, Mr. Mad Max at 6-1 and Snow On the River at 15-1.
