Opportunity knocked and the Kentwood High football team listened Saturday night at French Field.
The Conquerors were the beneficiaries of five Auburn Riverside fumbles, which helped Kentwood knock off the Ravens 44-6 in a South Puget Sound League game.
The Conquerors (2-1 in league, 3-1 overall) also used a balanced rushing attack to derail the Ravens as five Kentwood players rushed for 30 or more yards in the win. Leading the way was junior Jared Fuller, who went for 61 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Mikell Everett added 54 yards and a touchdown on five carries while Matt Hubbard chipped in a pair of touchdowns and 40 yards rushing on six carries.
It was Kentwood’s second straight win.
The Conquerors rolled to a 27-0 first-quarter lead on rushing touchdowns by Tristan Askew (2 yards), Hubbard and Fuller while Allain Songco added a 36-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Shane Green. Songco finished with three catches for 69 yards. For the season, he’s hauled in 14 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns.
Auburn Riverside’s lone score came in the second quarter, when quarterback John Hakala ran in a 2-yard touchdown.
Kentwood kicker Matt Bell converted on a 35-yard field goal late in the second quarter, giving the Conquerors a 30-6 halftime lead.
Everett (10 yards) and Hubbard (26 yards) wrapped up the scoring with a touchdown apiece in the third quarter.
Kentwood will try and stretch its winning streak to three games at 7 p.m. on Friday, when it plays at Kent-Meridian (0-4). Auburn Riverside, which opened the season with a 30-29 win over K-M only to drop its last three games, will play at Thomas Jefferson (0-4) on Saturday.
Bethel 24, Kentridge 0: After ripping off three straight wins to open the season, the Chargers (3-0 in league, 3-1 overall) came back to earth in a nonleague loss to the Braves (3-1).
Kentridge was playing without running back/linebacker Devin Topps. Topps suffered a sprained knee during a Week 3 win over Federal Way.
The Chargers entered the night having averaged 32 points per game, but managed little against the Braves, which play in the SPSL South. Kentridge quarterback Bethel pressured Kentridge quarterback Caleb Smith all night, sacking him three times and holding the Charger to 5 of 14 passing for 28 yards.
Meanwhile, Bethel’s Anthony Meray chewed up the KR defense, a group that came into the game having allowed just 27 points all season. Meray rushed for 233 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries.
Kentridge will play host to third-ranked Auburn (4-0) at 7 p.m. on Thursday at French Field. It’s a showdown between the only two remaining unbeaten teams from the SPSL North.
