The Class 4A girls soccer championship will have a decidedly local feel Saturday afternoon.

South Puget Sound League North Division powers Tahoma (20-1) and Kentwood (17-3-1) both won their respective semifinal games Friday night and will meet for the state title at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

Tahoma stunned Skyline 1-0 in one semifinal game. Skyline came into the match ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Bears took the lead in the third minute on a goal from Sarah Jenic, and hung on for the title berth.

Things were a bit tighter for the Conquerors, who outlasted Skyview 2-1 in a shootout to earn the program’s first ever berth in the state championship game. Kentwood’s Megan McNally recorded the Conquerors’ lone goal in regulation, converting in the 35th minute.

Tahoma will bring a five-game winning streak into the championship showdown.

Kentwood will ride an 11-game winning streak into the title match. The Conquerors are the only team to have beaten the Bears this season, knocking off Tahoma 2-0 on Oct. 28. Tahoma beat Kentwood on Oct. 2, 2-1.

Tahoma is taking aim on its first state championship since 2005. Kentwood has never won a state title, but took a program-best third last season. Tahoma is making its third straight state appearance. Kentwood is making its sixth straight state appearance.

The shootout victory was Kentwood’s second in the state tournament. The Conquerors came into the season having lost three consecutive shootout matches.
