Leslie Folsom is speechless.
Folsom, 42, continued what has been a magnificent run last week, edging Mimi Racicot 4-and-2 to win the Seattle Women’s Golf Association’s City Championship at Kent’s Meridian Valley Country Club. Folsom, who lives in South Seattle and plays out of Rainier Golf and Country Club, vaulted into some rare territory with the win, which was her third straight City title. Folsom joins Anne Carr and Ruth Jessen as the only golfers to ever win three consecutive SWGA titles.
“The first (of the three straight titles) was at Rainier, which was the thrill of a lifetime because it was in front of my home crowd,” Folsom said. “Last year, my mom was in town, and so it was special that she got to see me win.”
And this year?
“This year, all I can say is, ‘Wow.’ For my name to be in the same category as Jessen and Anne Carr … wow.”
While it was Folsom’s third City Championship in a row, it also was her fourth title in the last five years.
The ultimate goal?
“That would be to match Ann Swan, who won seven City Championships,” Folsom laughed.
Folsom knocked off Sue Ursino for last year’s crown. This time around, Folsom edged friend and Rainier teammate Racicot. It’s the first time the two have ever been paired up in match play.
This was the first time since 1997 that Meridian Valley Country Club has played host to the City Championship. The City Championship will be held at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish next year.
The SWGA has been around since 1927. Its membership is comprised of 13 private clubs in King County — Meridian Valley, Sahalee, Fairwood, Twin Lakes, Seattle, Plateau, Bear Creek, Inglewood, Glendale, Glen Acres, Overlake, Sand Point and Rainier.
