Due to the bomb cylcone, Kentlake was not able to submit athlete’s of the week for Nov. 29, so The Reporter will recognize those athletes this week.
The Kent Reporter athletes of the week for the week of Nov. 29 are from Kentlake; Yacouba ‘Cuba’ Diawara (Sr.) Wrestling, Jasmine DeMecilio (Sr.) Flag Football.
What do you value in your sport or about your team?
Diawara: I love the camaraderie our team has, and the toughness that comes with wrestling.
Demecilio: I love these girls and I feel like the team has bonded us together.
What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?
Diawara: I have learned to push myself and I have learned what it means to be accountable
Demecilio: Don’t take anything in your life for granted.
What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?
Diawara: When I’m not motivated I look at teammates working hard and get inspired to help us reach out team goals together.
Demecilio: I listen to music and take time to myself.
Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?
Diawara: Our team mom always makes sure we are eating well, with sandwiches and fruit snacks!
Demecilio: I would buy a Subway sandwich.
What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?
Diawara: This is going to be hard, but it will be worth it. Those who stay will be champions.
Demecilio: Don’t put yourself down and don’t push yourself too hard. You need time to relax.
From the sidelines:
Diawara: Cuba is a multiple sport athlete and takes part in multiple clubs at Kentlake and he takes great pride in being a Falcon. Cuba is a young man that is a leader on the football field, on the wrestling mat, and in the classroom. His personality shines bright, and you can always count on Cuba to bring the energy. He is a mentor to younger students, and we are lucky to have him in our program.
Demecilio: Jasmine is a leader first and foremost she brings a lot of passion to the sport along with her hard work and dedication. Jasmine’s dedication in the off season was spent working on her craft and love for the sport. Jasmine’s ability to read defenses and pick them apart is going show how hard Jasmine has worked. She returns as a Senior eager to repeat the teams success from last season while being a constant leader to incoming teammates, pushing them to learn the game as she helps them learn the system. Jasmine’s goal this season is to lead on her team to another NPSL title and lead the league in passing on her way to making a deep playoff run.
