Kent Reporter Coach of the Month: Dan Ito

Kentwood’s Dan Ito is the coach of a back-to-back state girls golf team.

The Kent Reporter Coach of the Month is Dan Ito from Kentwood High School, the girls golf coach.

KSD Athletics is working with coaches and athletes to better understand #myreasonwhy they participate in athletics. Please share with us your reasons for coaching.

I’ve had a lifelong love of the game, and one of my greatest joys is sharing that passion with younger generations. Coaching is more than teaching golf — it’s about helping students grow into confident, resilient individuals. I love seeing them develop not only as players, but as people who learn discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. My goal is that every student leaves with a positive experience and life lessons they can carry forward.

What are some of the ways you seek to explore and provide opportunities for students to become involved in athletics?

For me, athletics is about more than competition — it’s about belonging, growth, and learning life skills that extend well beyond high school. I work to create a welcoming and supportive team culture where every student feels they belong, regardless of their background or skill level. I want them to know they have a place to learn, contribute, and grow without fear of judgement

After they leave your school, what are some of things you hope your students will take away from their experiences on your teams and with athletics?

More than anything, I hope my students leave with values and skills that carry far beyond the golf course. I want them to take away confidence, discipline and resilience — knowing they can set goals, work hard, and overcome challenges. I also hope they remember the importance of teamwork, integrity, and supporting others, because those lessons apply to every aspect of life. If they develop a lifelong love of the game, that’s a bonus, but my main goal is that their experience on the team helps shape them into well-rounded individuals who are prepared for whatever path they choose.

Do you have a favorite book that has helped you become a better coach?

Yes, one of my favorite books is “Make Your Next Shot Your Best Shot: The Secret to Playing Great Golf” by Dr. Bob Rotella. His emphasis on the mental side of golf — staying present, letting go of mistakes, and focusing on what you can control — has really influenced the way I coach. I’ve found those lessons apply not only to golf, but also to life. I try to instill that same mindset in my players: to approach every shot, every round, and even every challenge with confidence and a forward-looking attitude
