Kentwood grad transfers to Gonzaga

Michael Ajayi announced March 26 that he will play his senior season with the Zags.

Kentwood High School grad Michael Ajayi announced on March 26 that he would be continuing his basketball career at Gonzaga University in Spokane.

It is a homecoming of sorts with Ajayi cutting that distance down 866 miles by playing at McCarthey Athletic Center next season.

Ajayi is now on his third school in his college career after beginning at the NWAC level playing two years at Pierce College before moving up to Pepperdine University for his junior season. While at Pierce, he was named West Region MVP and freshman of the year previous to that. In 2022, he recorded a double-double in all 14 league games.

The new Zag averaged 17.2 points per game in his first season at Pepperdine, while shooting 47% from three-point land. He also led the West Coast Conference in scoring this past year. With Gonzaga, he is jumping into one of the most successful college basketball programs in the country.

Gonzaga currently is preparing for its Sweet 16 match up with Purdue, a place Pepperdine hasn’t been since 1976.
