Another game, another shutout.
Such is life these days for the eighth-ranked Kentwood High girls soccer team.
The Conquerors did it again Tuesday night, needing only Chelsi Pennington’s goal in the 45th minute on an assist by Laura Scully to knock off Kentlake, 1-0, in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.
“It was a battle, maybe even a war,” said Kentwood coach Aaron Radford. “Kentlake has always been motivated to play us and this game was no different.”
Courtney Johnson and Megan Walburn combined in goal for the shutout. It’s the tandem’s fifth consecutive shutout. During that span, Kentwood has outscored its opponents 13-0.
But Tuesday night’s win didn’t come easy for the first-place Conquerors (6-0 with 18 points), who traveled to Auburn Riverside (5-0-1, 16 points) for a pivotal match Thursday night.
Kentlake (2-2-2 with 8 points), which clearly is a team on the rise this season under first-year girls coach Kyle Jones, was coming off a 0-0 tie to perennial power Tahoma.
“We did have some opportunities, but just couldn’t get one in,” Jones said. “(Kentwood is a) very good team and is ranked for a good reason. Although it’s never fun to lose, I feel that we took another step in the right direction.”
It was Pennington’s fifth goal of the season.
• ALSO: Auburn (2-4-1) put a 15-0 hurting on the winless Kent-Meridian (0-6-0) on Tuesday. The Trojans were led by Kristen Dick and Ali Lundberg, each of whom tallied three goals in the win. Dick added two assists. Jenna Henry, Emily Jameson and Alyssa Wall each scored two goals apiece and Micheal Paulston, Mariso Sanchezllanes, Jennsyn Chaney and Taylor Blaze all added a goal apiece. Chaney, Lundberg and Jameson all combined for the shutout between the pipes. … Jefferson (2-3-2) deadlocked with district rival Federal Way (2-3-1) 1-1. Kenna Friedman scored the Raiders’ lone goal with an assist from Jasmine Sharpe.
GOLF
Sean McMullen, who took sixth at the state tournament last spring, and Garick Kosai tied for medalist honors on Tuesday, as each carded a 37 at Fairwood Greens as the Chargers upended Auburn, 81-62. … Thomas Zavada led a 1-2-3-4-5 Kentwood finish on Tuesday as the Conquerors knocked off Kentlake, 98-59. Zavada earned medalist honors, carding a 35 followed by Kent Hagen (36), Shayne Barrett (37), Riley Kuranishi (39) and Tyler Clavin (40). … Rui Li paced the Kentwood girls, shooting a 36 for 27 points as the Conquerors upended Kentlake, 98-74, at Jade Greens Golf Club. Lindsey Douglas led the Falcons, carding a 40 on the par-36 course.
