Local wrestlers deliver All-SPSL tournament titles

Auburn heavyweights Mario Luevano and Jacob Apodaca captured class titles at the All-South Puget Sound League wrestling showdown at Auburn High School on Saturday.

Auburn heavyweights Mario Luevano and Jacob Apodaca captured class titles at the All-South Puget Sound League wrestling showdown at Auburn High School on Saturday.

Luevano defeated Kentwood’s Kyle Capperauld, 7-2, for the 220-pound win, while Apodaca stopped Kentridge’s J.T. Meier, 4-1, for the 285-pound crown.

Kentridge’s Derek Freitag dropped Enumclaw’s Kyle Opland by a 5-2 decision to pick up the 113-pound title.

Kentridge sophomore Nathan Hobbs finished fourth at 106.

Kentwood’s Andy Sandhu was fourth at 113 pounds, and Trenton Harris was fourth at 195 pounds.

At 138 pounds, Kent-Meridian’s Jahleel Smith dropped an 11-7 decision to Graham Kapowsin’s Corde Ferreira in the championship bout.

For Auburn, Drew Aplin dropped a 3-0 decision to Tahoma’s Nick Whitehead for the 120-pound final.

The Trojans’ Sam Lindsey defeated Curtis’ Jonathan Bridgeman, 6-1, to secure third place at 182 pounds.

Cole Washburn placed fourth at 160 pounds for the Trojans.

Auburn Mountainview’s Dylan Foley took a 7-6 decision against Spanaway Lake’s Angel Coria for third place at 132 pounds.

Tahoma won the event for the sixth year in a row. Auburn was second and Kentridge fifth.

 

Suit, Valdez, Suarez prevail in girls’ matches

Kentwood’s Sidney Suit and Kent-Meridian’s Ana Valdez and Xochithl Suarez took class titles in the All-SPSL girls tournament at Puyallup’s Rogers High School.

Suit downed Enumclaw’s Alexandra Puzon, 10-4, for the 100-pound win. Valdez handled Federal Way’s Ana Sanchez, Federal Way, 6-2, for the 110-pound crown, and Suarez topped Auburn’s Patricia Deleon, 5-2, for the 130-pound championship.

Kentwood’s Sara Mozaleskie (135 pounds) and Auburn Riverside’s Jessica Packer (145 pounds) were runners-up.

Federal Way took the team title. Kentwood was sixth, K-M seventh and Auburn 10th.
