Making the grade in the NHL: Five T-Birds headed to training camps

Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell on Thursday announced five T-Birds are heading to National Hockey League training camps.

The five T-Birds are goalie Jacob DeSerres, center Prab Rai, right wing Sena Acolatse and defensemen Stefan Warg and Brenden Dillon.

“We are happy to see that five of our players are attending NHL training camps this fall,” said Farwell. “This is the opportunity all players are striving to earn and we wish all of our guys the best of luck at their respective camps.”

DeSerres, taken in the third round, 84th overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2008 NHL Draft will be leaving for the Flyers training camp on Sunday, September 6.

Last season DeSerres was 11-16-0-0 with a save percentage of .883 and a goals against average of 3.41. DeSerres had one shutout last season.

Rai, taken in the fifth round, 131st overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2008 NHL draft will be leaving for the Canucks training camp on Friday, September 4.

Last year Rai appeared in 61 games and had 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points. He had a plus/minus rating of plus-11 with 29 penalty minutes.

Warg, selected in the fifth round, 143rd overall, by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Draft will be heading to the Ducks camp on September 4.

In his first year in the WHL last season Warg appeared in 70 games and had one goal and 16 assists for 17 points. He had a plus/minus rating of plus-1 with 80 penalty minutes

Dillon, at 6’2 and 208-pounds, has been invited to the training camp of the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. He will leave for camp on September 4.

Dillon played in 70 games last year and has 10 assists and 68 penalty minutes.

Acolatse has been invited to the training camp of the Phoenix Coyotes and will be heading there on Saturday, September 5.

Last year Acolatse appeared in 70 games and had seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points with 143 penalty minutes.

The only home preseason game of the year will be on Saturday, September 12, against the Everett Silvertips at ShoWare Center at 7:05 p.m. This game is a special fundraiser game for the Kent School District.

They play three games in the Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament at Comcast Arena over Labor Day Weekend. They will play the Prince George Cougars on Friday, September 4 at 11:30 a.m. The T- Birds then take on the Silvertips at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 5. They finish out the weekend against the Spokane Chiefs at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 6.

The T-Birds will open the 2009-10 Western Hockey League regular season with back-to-back home games against the Silvertips on Friday, September 18, at 7:35 p.m. and the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, September 19, at 7:05 p.m. Both games are at ShoWare Center in Kent.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.

T-Birds season tickets are currently on sale. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
