VOLLEYBALL: Kentwood clinches seventh straight state berth; Kentridge, Kent-Meridian eliminated

The Kentwood High volleyball team split its matches at the West Central District 4A volleyball tournament last Friday and Saturday, but still managed to punch its ticket to a seventh straight Class 4A state berth.

GIRLS SOCCER: Kentlake, Kentwood and Tahoma all punch state tickets

The girls Class 4A state soccer tournament will have a distinctively South Puget Sound League North Division feel this season. Especially from a local perspective. Kentlake, Kentwood and Tahoma all earned berths to the tournament by winning their respective West Central District games on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Moose Jaw takes down Seattle 2-1 in shootout action Nov. 7

The Moose Jaw Warriors defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 in a shootout Sunday night at the Civic Centre in Moose Jaw. The game was tied 1-1 after 65 minutes of play to send the game to a shootout. Moose Jaw elected to shoot first in the shootout.

Wheatkings thrash T-Birds 3-2 in overtime Nov. 6

The Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 Nov. 6 at Westman Place in Brandon, Manitoba. This was the first game of a six-game road trip for the T-Birds. They faced the Moose Jaw Warriors Sundayl losing to them in a shootout.

Kamloops defeats Seattle 3-2 in overtime Oct. 30

The Kamloops Blazers defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 in overtime Saturday night at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia. Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped a season-high 49 shots. His record with the overtime loss is now 5-3-2-2.

He’s not much for offense. But Friday night at French Field, Kentwood High defensive back Steele Warner was plenty offensive – on both sides of the ball. Warner, a senior, returned a fumble for a touchdown and set a school playoff record on offense with a 91-yard rushing score on his only carry of the night as the fourth-ranked Conquerors blitzed Heritage 57-14 in a state preliminary game.

VOLLEYBALL: West Central District tournament at Kentwood High Friday, Saturday

Kentwood junior Kacie Seims sets the ball to a teammate during a South Puget Sound League tournament match against Curtis on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Todd Beamer High in Federal Way. The Conquerors lost to the Vikings in four games (25-13, 25-22, 26-28, 25-19) and will take the No. 4 seed to the Class 4A West Central District tournament, which is slated for Nov. 6 at Kentwood High. Overall, it was a rough day for local teams at the league tournament. Kent-Meridian lost to Puyallup (22-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-23) and will take the No. 8 seed to the district tournament while Kentridge fell to Rogers (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17) and will take the No. 10 seed. The top eight teams from the 16-team district tournament field advance to state, which is next weekend at Kennewick’s Toyota Center.

The Kentlake High girls swim team delivered another good day in the pool at Rogers High in Puyallup Oct. 29-30, grabbing a third-place finish in the Class 4A West Central District.

One broke through. Another broke down only to get back up and deliver one of the season’s most courageous performances. Despite the heavy rain, there were plenty of local highlights from which to choose during the Class 4A Westside Classic cross country race at Fort Steilacoom Park on Saturday, Oct. 30.

No resolution was reached during the appeal hearing Friday, Oct. 29 for Kentwood High quarterback Shane Green. Green, a senior, was suspended for last week's game against Auburn Riverside along with Thursday night's 34-10 win over Kentridge for violating the Kent School District's athletic code. The district was expected to complete its investigation into the incident Friday afternoon.
