A confident Jahleel Smith peaked at the right hour.
The Kent-Meridian senior climbed a personal-best 14 feet, 9 inches to finish second in the pole vault finals at the state Class 4A track and field meet Friday.
Richland’s Larry Still topped the field with a vault of 15-6 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
Smith’s district rival, Kentridge’s Jake Philpott, finished fourth with a vault of 14-0.
In the girls long jump final, Kentwood junior Brittany Woke saved her best for last, leaping a personal-best 18-0 ¼ to capture the title.
Action resumes Saturday.
