T-Birds acquire Bensmiller from Raiders

The Seattle Thunderbirds have acquired right wing Layne Bensmiller and a conditional pick in the 2017 Bantam Draft from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for left wing Nic Holowko.

The Seattle Thunderbirds have acquired right wing Layne Bensmiller and a conditional pick in the 2017 Bantam Draft from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for left wing Nic Holowko.

Last season Bensmiller had 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points in 74 combined games with the Raiders and Calgary Hitmen. In 114 career WHL games with the Raiders and Hitmen Bensmiller has 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points. Bensmiller is a right-hand shot who is 6-foot and 193 pounds.

“We are happy to Layne to our team at this time,” said T-Birds general manager Russ Farwell. “Layne should give us a little added scoring and experience as we put together this year’s team.”

Last season with the T-Birds Holowko had six goals and 14 assists for 20 points in 72 games. He played 18 playoff games and had two goals and four assists. In 135 career regular season games over two seasons, Holowko has 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points.

On ice

The T-Birds will conclude their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series against the Everett Silvertips this weekend. The T-Birds host the Silvertips at 7:35 p.m. Friday at the ShoWare Center and travel to Everett for a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday.

The T-Birds open the 2016-17 regular season in Portland against the Winterhawks at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. The T-Birds’ home opener is Saturday, Oct. 1, against the Winterhawks at 7:05 p.m.

Single-game tickets are on sale. Fans can purchase single game tickets online or at the ShoWare Center box office. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
