Jonathan Parker had three goals and Prab Rai had two goals and an assist to help lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 7-2 victory over the Kamloops Blazers at Interior Savings Centre Nov. 13 in Kamloops.
Kamloops was the T-Birds’ first game in a four-game road trip. They traveled to Everett Nov. 14, beating the Silvertips 4-0.
Seattle (6-12-1-3) took a 1-0 lead at 6:37 of the first period on a breakaway unassisted goal by Rai. In a four-on-four situation, Rai got to a loose puck in the neutral zone on the right side of the ice and entered the Blazers zone. Rai, a left-handed shot, was moving right to left as he came in on Kamloops goalie Jon Groenheyde. Rai beat Groenheyde with a quick shot under the goalie’s blocker for his eighth goal of the year.
Kamloops (10-11-2-0) outshot Seattle 12-7 in the first period.
The T-Birds went in front 2-0 at 2:41 of the second period on a goal by Charles Wells. Rai backhanded the puck from the left boards in the neutral zone to Wells speeding up the left side. Wells entered the Blazers zone with a fair bit of speed and went wide on the Kamloops defender. Wells looked like he was going to go around the Blazers net but brought the puck back quickly and slid it under Groenheyde for his fourth goal of the year.
Kamloops got on the board at 3:01 of the second on a goal by Dylan Willick. Jake Trask had the only assist on the goal.
Jeremy Schappert gave the T-Birds a 3-1 lead at 8:43 of the second with his fourth goal of the year. Luke Lockhart won a face off in the right circle in the Blazers zone backwards to Schappert at the point. Schappert carried the puck down the boards and then cut across the top of the right circle. Schappert put a hard wrist shot on goal that beat Groenheyde over the left shoulder.
The T-Birds took a 4-1 lead at 14:37 of the second on a power-play goal by Parker. Lockhart sent the puck from the left boards to Stefan Warg at the left point. Warg skated the puck to the center of the ice and put a slap shot on goal with traffic in front of Groenheyde. The Kamloops goalie took Warg’s shot in the chest, juggled the puck off his glove and it bounced to his right. Parker was stationed to the right of the goalie, got the loose puck, and put the puck up and over the goalie’s outstretched leg from a sharp angle.
The T-Birds led in shots on goal 19-17 after two periods by outshooting the Blazers 12-5 in the second period.
Parker put the T-Birds in front 5-1 at 1:47 of the third period with his second goal of the night. Steve Chaffin sent the puck up the ice on the left side to Parker. Parker carried the puck into the Blazers zone with a defender in front of him. Parker cut into the high slot and using the defenseman as a screen swept a shot on goal. The shot beat Groenheyde through his legs.
The Blazers got a second goal at 8:10 of the third when Colin Smith scored a power-play goal. Tyler Shattock and Giffen Nyren had assists.
Parker put the T-Birds in front 6-2 at 11:55 of the third with his third goal of the game. Lockhart got the puck to Parker who carried it into the Blazers zone on the left side. With Lockhart and Brad Haber crashing the net, Parker put a quick wrist shot on goal that beat Groenheyde over the blocker.
Parker’s hat trick was the second hat trick of the season by a T-Bird. Wells had three goals against the Prince George Cougar at ShoWare Center on Oct. 17.
Rai scored his second goal of the night at 14:37 of the third to make it a 7-2 T-Birds lead. Rai carried the puck on his backhand down the right side towards the Kamloops net. Rai had a Kamloops defender all over him but he was able to shovel the puck over Groenheyde’s blocker for his second goal of the night. Wells had the only assist on the goal.
Seattle outshot Kamloops 9-7 in the third period and 28-24 in the game.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped 22 of 24 shots and his record improves to 5-8-1-3.
Groenheyde made 21 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 3-4-1-0.
The T-Birds travel to Vancouver to face the Giants Sunday at 5 p.m. at Pacific Coliseum. The T-Birds will travel to Kennewick to face the Tri-City Americans Nov. 17, at 7:05 p.m. They are back home at ShoWare Center Nov. 20, to take on the Blazers at 7:35 p.m.
