T-Birds take down Winterhawks in 7-6 shootout: See the slide show

Burke Gallimore and Luke Lockhart had two goals each to help lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 7-6 shootout win over the Portland Winterhawks at ShoWare Center in Kent Saturday night.

Burke Gallimore and Luke Lockhart had two goals each to help lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 7-6 shootout win over the Portland Winterhawks at ShoWare Center in Kent Saturday night.

The T-Birds won the shootout 2-0 to win the game. Connor Sanvido was the first shoot and he beat Portland goalie Keith Hamilton through the legs. Spencer Bennett shot first for Portland but was not able to get a shot off as the puck trickled past Seattle goalie Michael Salmon.

Marcel Noebels shot second for Seattle. He came down on Hamilton and snapped a quick shot over his glove into the top right corner of the net. Taylor Peters was Portland’s second shooter and Salmon stopped him.

Seattle finished the preseason 4-3-1-0.

The T-Birds will open the regular season against the Everett Silvertips on Friday, September 24 at Comcast Arena in Everett at 7:35pm. The T-Birds will hold their home opener on Saturday, September 25 at 7:05p.m. against long time rival, the Portland Winterhawks. The T-Birds will wrap up their opening weekend in Kennewick against the Tri-City Americans on Sunday, September 26, at 5p.m. at the Toyota Center.

Jason Trott gave the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead at 7:23 of the first period. Gasper Kopitar and Josh Hanson had the assists.

Portland (4-0-0-2) took a 2-0 lead at 16:30 of the first on a goal by Sven Bartschi. David Watt and Tyler Wotherspon assisted on the goal.

Seattle outshot Portland 10-7 in the first period.

The T-Birds got on the board 30 seconds into the second period when Chance Lund scored. Burke Gallimore fed Lund on a two-on-one break Lund poked the puck past Portland goalie Keith Hamilton. Brendan Rouse had the second assist on the goal.

Seattle tied the game 2-2 at 6:23 of the second on a goal by Gallimore. Rouse fed the puck to Gallimore in the left corner. Gallimore carried the puck towards the net, faked a centering pass and then snapped the puck through Hamilton’s legs.

Trott scored at 9:43 of the second to put the Winterhawks in front 3-2. Watt and Tayler Jordan had the assists.

The T-Birds came right back and tied the game 3-3 at 11:08 of the second on a power-play goal by Luke Lockhart. Brenden Dillon sent the puck from the right point to Noebels at the hash marks along the boards. Noebels put a hard snap shot on goal that rebounded above Hamilton. As the puck was descending Lockhart batted it out of the air and past the Portland goalie.

Seattle went in front 4-3 at 15:09 of the second on a second goal from Lockhart. Noebels had the puck in the left corner and centered it to Lockhart in the left circle. Lockhart snapped the puck past Hamilton on the glove side.

Portland tied the game 4-4 at 18:21 of the second on a goal by Spencer Bennett. Hanson and Jordan had the assists.

Seattle led 30-21 in shots after two periods.

The Winterhawks took a 5-4 lead at 5:40 of the third period on a goal by Seth Swenson. Hanson and Taylor Peters had the assists.

Gallimore tied the game 5-5 at 7:13 of the third when he beat Hamilton with a nice move in close. Gallimore came out of the left corner, deked a defender, got Hamilton to go down and then beat him high over the glove. Mitch Elliot and Colin Jacobs had the assists.

Portland took the lead back and made it 6-5 at 7:49 of the third on a goal by Brendan Leipsic. Bartschi had the only assist on the goal.

Seattle jumped right back in the game and tied it 6-6 at 15:27 of the third. Rouse poked home the puck in a scramble in front of Hamilton. Jacobs and Connor Sanvido had assists on the tying goal.

Seattle outshot Portland 45-44 in the game.

Seattle goalie Michael Salmon made 38 saves on 44 shots to get the win.

Hamilton made 38 saves on 45 shots in the loss.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2010-11 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
