New markers honor Civil War veterans at Kent’s Saar Pioneer Cemetery

Family, friends, civic and community leaders joined the South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS) in dedicating replacement markers for four Civil War veterans at a ceremony Sept. 6 at Saar Pioneer Cemetery in Kent.

Markers were replaced for Civil War veterans William Button, Elias Clark, Nathaniel Hoag and Lewis Warren. New markers also were dedicated for Caroline, Edith and Johann Kasbaum; Mary and Hardin Lusk; Isaac and Nellie Parmenter; Benjamin Pittman; and Margaret Saar.

The dedication of an Unmarked Graves Monument and City of Kent Landmark plaque also was part of the ceremony.

The SKCGS, Greater Kent Historical Society and Museum, and E Clampus Vitus sponsored the ceremony.

The cemetery is at 91st Avenue South and South 212th Way near Winco Foods and Highway 167. It is named after former King County Councilman Peter Saar, who in 1873 buried his wife on a small hill on their property. During the next 76 years approximately 141 people were buried at the site.
