Excel celebrates charter school law

Excel Public Charter School in Kent will host a celebration on Wednesday to mark the passage of a Senate bill that allows charter schools to operate again.
Parents, students, faculty, legislators and community supporters spent the past seven months working to keep charter schools open after the state Supreme Court ruled the schools unconstitutional in September. Excel has been operating as an Alternative Learning Experience since December, when charter schools ceased to exist because of the Supreme Court’s ruling, and is in the process of transitioning back to a charter school.
The celebration will be from 1:25-2:15 p.m. at the school, 19300 108th Ave. SE., and will include remarks from parents, students and Sen. Joe Fain, R-Auburn, who co-sponsored the charter bill that became law on April 3. Light refreshments will be provided.
Excel is the second stop on a tour of celebrations at public charter schools statewide. Last week, charter school supporters celebrated at Summit Sierra in Seattle.
