Member of the Kent Meridian Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6785 visited veterans at Arbor Village Senior Living last Friday to extend handshakes, hugs and thanks for their years of service.
The VFW frequently visits area senior centers, retirement communities and schools to honor veterans and inform, teach and help students. The post, a nonprofit organization, attends many veterans-focused events and is involved in many programs, including the coordination of activities with area Scouting.
Veterans Day weekend brought members to the East Hill care facility. Post members greeted veterans and hand-delivered certificates commending them for their military service and remembrance red poppies, a flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who served the country.
“We wanted to make sure they’re recognized,” said Alan B’Hymer of VFW 6785. “We want to honor them for their service. It’s just something we do.”
According to Sharon Peetz, activity assistant at Arbor Village, 38 veterans live at the senior and assisted living facility.
