Shirley Joanne Michelsen

January 5, 1934- July 28, 2026

Shirley Joanne Michelsen, known to all as Joanne, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, at

her home at Farrington Court in Kent, Washington, following a brief decline in health. She was

comfortable, at peace, and surrounded by care and love.

Born on January 5, 1934, in Kent, Washington, Joanne was one of five children born to Donald

and Effie Bell. She spent her early childhood on Central Avenue in the Kent Valley. Later her

family moved to Guiberson Street on Scenic Hill, (only a couple blocks from where she lived at

the time of her passing). She loved her hometown and remained deeply connected to the

community throughout her life.

Joanne graduated with the first graduating class of Kent-Meridian High School in 1952. During

her high school years, she was honored as Miss Cornucopia, an early indication of the warmth,

confidence, and vibrant personality that would become her trademark.

Joanne was preceded in death by her son, Kurt Michelsen; her daughter, Susan Turner; her

brother, Donald Bell; and her sisters, Lee Bailey and Marcella Smith. She is survived by her

grandson, Brandon Turner and his wife, Emily; her sister, Beverly Johnson; and many nieces,

nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Joanne spent many years working in the telephone industry, beginning as a telephone operator

and later serving in a variety of positions. She took pride in her work and treasured the

friendships she formed along the way.

To know Joanne was to know joy. Blessed with boundless energy, a quick wit, and an

unforgettable sense of humor, she delighted in making people laugh. Whether through a clever

practical joke, a funny story, or a spontaneous act of kindness, Joanne instinctively knew how to

lift the spirits of everyone around her. She was, quite simply, the life of the party.

She loved celebrating life’s special moments and believed every holiday deserved to be

celebrated with enthusiasm. Friends and family looked forward to seeing what costume Joanne

would appear in next. She happily dressed as the Easter Bunny, wore elaborate Christmas outfits,

and delighted everyone with festive patriotic attire for the Fourth of July and other celebrations.

Her playful spirit and willingness to embrace the fun in life became one of her most cherished

trademarks.

An avid knitter, Joanne spent countless hours creating beautiful handmade gifts for family and

friends. Even during her years at Farrington Court, her knitting needles were rarely still, every

stitch reflecting her generous heart.

During her years at Farrington Court, Joanne formed many treasured friendships. In the last

several years of her life, she shared a particularly close and meaningful relationship with Ken

Carlson. Their friendship brought each of them comfort, happiness, laughter, and

companionship, and it was a joy to witness.

What Joanne will be remembered for most is not any single accomplishment, but the way she

made people feel. Family and friends will remember her radiant smile, generous spirit,

unwavering faith, infectious laughter, playful heart, and her unconditional love.

A private family celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at a later date.
