Two-vehicle Kent crash kills couple in their 80s on East Hill

An 85-year-old Renton man and an 82-year-old Renton woman died two days after they were each injured as passengers in a two-vehicle collision on the East Hill in Kent.

Alvin Jitsuo Terada and Mitsuko Terada each died Aug. 4 in Seattle from multiple blunt force injuries suffered Aug. 2 in a crash at SE 208th Street and 116th Avenue SE in Kent, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“We believe they were husband and wife,” Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla said in a Aug. 7 email.

A vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Kent man was traveling eastbound on SE 208th Street, approaching 116th Avenue SE, Padilla said. A second vehicle, driven by a 21-year-old Renton woman, with Alvin Terada and Mitsuko Terada, of Renton, as passengers, was traveling westbound on SE 208th Street, then attempted to make a left turn from 116th Avenue SE.

“Both vehicles collided at the intersection,” Padilla said.

All four people were transported to hospitals. Both drivers had non-life-threatening but serious injuries, Padilla said.

The Kent man was initially being investigated for vehicular assault, said Padilla, which was prior to the two passengers dying.

“The investigation is ongoing, and depending on what additional evidence is obtained, a final charging decision may result in a different charge(s),” Padilla said.
