Senior communities converge in friendly cupcake bake-off

All is fair in love and war, especially when frosting is involved.

Creative bakers from Arbor Village, Aegis, Farringdon Court, Fountain Court and The Weatherly senior communities competed for the top cupcake chef title June 29 at Kent’s Radcliffe Place.

Patty Davis, a longtime chef at The Weather lnn, captured the crown in the Senior Living Cupcake War. Gloria Rowland, of Radcliffe Place, was second.

Lois Jasmer, Radcliffe Place’s community relations manager, threw down the gauntlet and challenged other senior communities in the area to a cupcake war. The theme for the bake-off was Independence Day, and the chefs’ masterpieces were judged on creativity as well as taste.

Local dignitaries and personalities judged the contest. Judges varied from teachers to City Council members, Kent Fire Chief Jim Schneider to Miss Cornucopia Days’ Kajal Sabaya, Mama Stortini’s sous chef Lance Cash to community leaders.

“With all the gluten-free eating going on these days, finding judges that would eat cupcakes was a lot harder than I thought it would be,” Jasmer said.
