Kent Police arrested a 27-year-old Kent man wanted for failing to show up to court after charges filed in 2023 for first-degree assault and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm when he reportedly aimed a gun at Subway employees on the East Hill that led to a five-hour standoff.

Officers took the man into custody last month without incident when they found him standing in the driveway outside his Kent residence, according to a Jan. 6 Kent Police news release. An officer received an alert after a Flock Safety camera captured the license plate of a vehicle owned by the man. Officers showed up at the registered address for the vehicle and found the man.

Although booked into the King County jail and charged with the crimes in 2023, at some point the man was released on bail and he neglected to show up in court for hearings, according to the news release. King County issued a $50,000 warrant for his arrest.

The arrest of the man in December went much quicker than in 2023.

Officers responded at about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8, 2023 to the 25600 block of 104th Avenue SE after reports of gunfire in the parking lot, according to police. Officers found an armed suspect standing in front of a Subway store. It was later determined he had reportedly pointed a loaded gun into the store at employees.

After a five-hour standoff that involved numerous officers, a K-9 unit, Valley SWAT and negotiators, police took him into custody without further incident.

During the standoff, Subway employees were evacuated from the store. Officers recovered a loaded weapon reportedly owned by the man.

Police credited the city’s Flock Safety cameras for the man’s arrest last month. Police have about 20 cameras at intersections across the city that capture images of vehicles and their license plates. Alerts are sent to officers in their vehicles if a car has been stolen or belongs to someone wanted by law officials.
