Police arrest Kent boy in stabbing incident

Kent Police arrested a 17-year-old Kent boy for investigation of first-degree assault in connection with the stabbing of a 30-year-old Auburn man at about 6:56 a.m. Jan. 9 at a convenience store parking lot.

The Kent Animal Care and Control Shelter is owned and operated presently by King County. But that will change in coming months.

King County now says it will stay in animal-shelter business until June 30

King County officials won’t be getting out of the animal-shelter business as quickly as they had planned. The County Council agreed Monday with a request by County Executive Dow Constantine to extend the deadline for closing the Kent and Bellevue shelters to June 30, from the previous Jan. 31.

The Kent Animal Care and Control Shelter is owned and operated presently by King County. But that will change in coming months.

A 31-year-old man was sentenced Jan. 6 to a minimum of 7 years, 2 months in prison for the second-degree rape in August 2008 of a 14-year-old runaway girl in Kent.

A 21-year-old Kent man pleaded not guilty Monday morning in King County Superior Court in Kent to a charge of third-degree child molestation in connection with a Dec. 16 attack of a 14-year-old girl along a trail near Kent-Meridian High School.

Green River levee system has weak areas, could affect flood control

Recent repair projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have greatly improved the strength of sections of the Green River levees in Kent. But other levees remain weak, and some won't be fixed until at least 2011.

Eight ShoWare Center vendors caught selling alcohol to minors

A state Liquor Control Board sting caught eight vendors at the ShoWare Center in Kent selling alcohol to minors during a recent hockey game. SMG, the operators of the city-owned arena, faces a possible $500 fine or a five-day suspension of its liquor license in February by the liquor board for selling alcohol to minors at concession stands during a Dec. 11 Seattle Thunderbirds hockey game. SMG requested a Jan. 13 hearing with a liquor board officer to get the fine or suspension reduced.

Kent city officials Tuesday opened the South 228th Street overpass between 84th Avenue South and 76th Avenue South. The street had been closed for 18 months as construction crews completed the $20 million project.

Red Cross kitchen can feed thousands if Green River floods this winter

The American Red Cross can feed thousands of residents this winter if Green River flooding causes large evacuations in Kent, Auburn, Renton or Tukwila. Red Cross and King County officials Tuesday in Renton displayed a mobile kitchen housed in a 53-foot trailer where workers can produce as many as 12,000 to 15,000 hot meals per day.

World Championship Ice Racing Series comes to the ShoWare Center

Mix motorcycles and ice and what do you get? You’ll find out when the World Championship Ice Racing Series comes to the ShoWare Center 8 p.m. Dec. 18 in Kent. More than 30 professional racers will compete on motorcycles and four-wheel, all-terrain vehicles around an oval track on the ice. Racers can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds on the motorcycles and reach speeds of 50 mph on the all-terrain vehicles.
