Kent School District must tap its ‘Rainy Day Fund’

The parents in Kent have demanded a plan to deal with reducing class size since April.

The Kent School District has not responded, and has, in fact, made the unconscionable decision to provoke a strike by sitting on a multi-million-dollar surplus in its “Rainy Day Fund,” rather than deal with the issue of class size.

Obviously their priorities are neither with the teachers, nor the students, nor the parents. The question must be asked, where, then, are the priorities? And why?

Parents deserve an answer. So does the whole community of teachers.

The whole problem could be solved by using available money from the “Rainy Day Fund.”

If there is one issue all educators agree is critical for effective education, that issue is class size.

Legally, Washington state school districts are required to keep a 2.5-3 percent fund balance. KSD’s fund balance is at about 8 percent.
