Letter: Teachers out of line to strike

The current strike by the Kent Education Association strike against the Kent school district shows how shortsighted and narrow-minded the teachers have become. They are hired to provide guidance and direction to the future generations. What kind of example are they setting? That it is OK to disregard the law if you’re a teacher instead of following them? Would a “bonus” applied for a class over a certain size magically make more hours happen in a day? Also, why do they allow sports to be conducted in spite the ongoing strike, is education at a lower priority than sports? What kind of a message are the teachers sending to our children?

They need to learn to apply reality to the situation instead of apathy toward the job and students they are supposed to be teaching. If they don’t want to be working that’s fine. Since the union is in violation of the law and they have voted to ignore the law, they should either quit or be fired. There are plenty of hungry recent graduates who would be happy to replace them. The current economy is stressful enough for marginal families and this is just one additional stressor they shouldn’t have to have to handle right now.

Bill Beckett,

Kent
