The 2016-2017 city of Kent’s Spotlight Series opens on Saturday, Oct. 15 with Reduced Shakespeare Company’s “Complete History of America (abridged): Election Edition.”

The performance will bring some much-needed levity to the last weeks leading up to Election Day as three performers deliver 600 years of American history in 6,000 seconds. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. at Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center, 10020 SE 256th St.

The Boston Herald describes the performance as “what the ‘Daily Show’ might be like if it were hosted by the Marx Brothers.” The “bad boys of abridgment” go from Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong, from George Washington to Barack Obama, from the Bering Strait to Baghdad, from the New World to New World Order. It’s a 90-minute roller coaster ride through the glorious quagmire that is American History.

In this Election Edition, the presidential front runners (and who knows, maybe the President himself) may just put in an appearance to answer audience questions: Who really discovered America? How old was John McCain at the beginning of the Civil War? How many Democrats does it take to screw in a light bulb?

In the spirit of Shakespeare himself, RSC shows contain some occasional bawdy language and mild innuendo. All children (and parents) are different, so RSC rates their shows PG-13: “Pretty good if you’re 13.”

Tickets are $28 general, $25 senior, and $15 student. Buy tickets online at kentarts.com, by calling 253-856-5051 or in person at the Kent Commons, 525 Fourth Ave. N. Hours for phone and in-person sales are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Box office is closed on Sunday.
