Juneteenth Celebration in Kent set for Saturday, June 21

Free event will go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Morrill Meadows Park

The annual Juneteenth Celebration in Kent is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 21 at Morrill Meadows Park, 10600 SE 248th St.

“This highly anticipated, family-friendly event will offer a full day of free entertainment, cultural performances, and community unity to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States,” according to the Kent Black Action Commission, which hosts the celebration.

Juneteenth, recognized nationally as a federal holiday since 2021, marks June 19, 1865—the historic day when enslaved individuals in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

This year’s theme, “Freedom Through Culture and Community,” emphasizes the importance of coming together to celebrate Black history, resilience and contributions to American society, according to the Kent Black Action Commission.

Event highlights

Live musical performances: Enjoy an electrifying performance by renowned jazz guitarist Michael Powers, whose soulful sounds have captivated audiences across the nation. The lineup also features local hip-hop artists, spoken word performers, and gospel singers representing the diverse voices of the African American community.

Cultural dance and poetry: Attendees will be treated to traditional African and Afro-Caribbean dance presentations, as well as powerful poetic tributes that speak to the journey from slavery to liberation.

Free cultural food: Guests will be able to enjoy a variety of complimentary soul food and international dishes, offering a true taste of African American heritage and global Black cultures.

Family friendly activities: With entertainment for all ages, the event will include interactive cultural exhibits, youth crafts, community resource booths, and storytelling sessions celebrating Black history.
