Kent’s Spotlight Series will celebrate the winter solstice and its warm traditions with a concert featuring Windham Hill artists Will Ackerman, Barbara Higbie, Alex de Grassi and Todd Boston.

The performance is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, at Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center, 10020 SE 256th St.

Ackerman founded Windham Hill Records in Palo Alto, Calif., in 1975. The label’s recordings were a runaway success with critics and audiences alike, and the label became synonymous with the best in acoustic music in the 1980s and 90s. Windham Hill’s 10 Winter Solstice compilation recordings have sold many millions of copies and altered people’s notions of seasonal music.

The 30th anniversary Winter Solstice Concert will include original and traditional acoustic music from drawn from the Winter Solstice series, as well as the featured artists’ many solo releases.

A Grammy-winning guitarist, Ackerman’s career spans more than three decades. He is universally recognized as the preeminent pioneer in the new age music movement.

Higbie, a Grammy Award-nominated singer, champion fiddler, pianist, and songwriter, was the first female instrumentalist on the Windham Hill label.

Grammy-nominated guitarist and composer Alex de Grassi has been a unique voice in the world of acoustic guitar for more than 30 years. From his first performances as a street musician and in university coffee houses, to engagements at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Montreux Jazz Festival, Alex has helped lay the foundation for contemporary finger-style guitar.

Bassist Boston will join Ackerman, Higbie, and de Grassi as a supporting musician.

Tickets are $32 for adults, $30 for seniors and $15 for youths. Tickets may be purchased at kentarts.com, by calling 253-856-5051 or in person at the Kent Commons, 525 Fourth Ave. N. Hours for phone and in-person sales are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Box office is closed on Sunday.
