Edwin Obras, Kevin Schilling lead primary race for 33rd District House seat

Kent resident Darryl Jones in third place; top two advance to general election

It appears Democrats Edwin Obras and Kevin Schilling will advance in the Legislative District 33 state representative Position No. 1 race from the Aug. 5 primary to the Nov. 4 general election.

Obras has 43.5% (5,531 votes) and Schilling has 32.1% (4,084 votes), according to results released Aug. 5 by King County Elections. Republican Darryl Jones is in third with 24.2% (3,077 votes).

The two candidates with the most votes will advance to the general election. King County Elections will release results weekdays and certify the election Aug. 19.

The winner in November will replace Tina Orwall, who was appointed by the King County Council to replace Karen Keiser, who retired, as the 33rd District senator. Orwall is running unopposed for the Senate seat.

Obras, of SeaTac, was appointed by the King County Council in December 2024 to replace Orwall. Schilling is the mayor of Burien. Jones, of Kent, lost to Zandria Michaud in a 2023 Kent City Council race.

The 33rd Legislative District includes parts of Kent, Tukwila and Renton, Burien, and the cities of Normandy Park, SeaTac and Des Moines.
