Kent Councilmember Ron Harmon has been appointed by Governor Gregoire to serve as one of nine members of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

The commission aims to find solutions to problems created as a result of the increased number of vehicles on state highways and subsequent accidents and traffic deaths.

“I’m honored to be given the privilege of serving on the Traffic Safety Commission,” Harmon said. “I look forward to partnering with all state, county and local agencies to provide safer roadways with uniform traffic laws and by educating Washington drivers on how to prevent serious injuries, or even death due to traffic accidents.”

Harmon has served on Kent’s Drinking Drivers Task Force for nine years, including seven as chair. He has also chaired the City’s Public Safety Committee for seven years, and has served seven years on the Public Works Committee.

“Councilmember Harmon has been extensively involved in initiatives to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Kent’s Police Chief Steve Strachan. “This appointment shows the respect Commission members have for Kent and its involvement in traffic safety programs.”

The Traffic Safety Commission was created by Washington Law in 1967 to plan and supervise programs for the prevention of traffic accidents on streets and highways, including educational campaigns, development of traffic safety programs, and the promotion of uniform enforcement of traffic safety laws and improved driver education.

Chaired by the Governor, the commission is comprised of the superintendent of public instruction, the director of licensing, the secretary of transportation, the chief of the State Patrol, the secretary of health, the secretary of social and health Services, a representative of the Association of Washington Cities, a member of the Association of Counties and a representative of the judiciary.

Harmon’s appointment was effective May 27. It is a volunteer position that serves at the pleasure of the governor.
