Police arrest 71-year-old man at Riverwood Apartments on Russell Road

Kent Police took a 71-year-old man into custody after the fatal shooting a 28-year-old man during a dispute Friday, Aug. 19 in the parking lot at the Riverwood Apartments, 24620 Russell Road.

Juan Manuel Vazio Vasquez died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday, Aug. 22.

Officers responded just after 6:30 p.m. to a report of a dispute between two men in the parking lot of the apartment complex just south of West Meeker Street and east of the Riverbend Driving Range, according to a police statement. Multiple apartment residents called 911 to report sounds of the altercation that escalated into a shooting of the one man.

Officers arrived within two minutes of being dispatched and discovered Vasquez in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to police. He was unconscious and without a pulse. Officers performed life-saving medical aid but were not able to revive Vasquez.

Both men are believed to be residents of the apartment complex, according to police. The Kent Major Crimes detectives were called to the scene to conduct the investigation. The 71-year-old man was detained, and is in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

No information was released by police about the connection between the two men or what the dispute was about.

This is the seventh homicide this year, according to Kent Police. Kent had 14 homicides in 2021, eight in 2020, four in 2019 and seven in 2018.
