Man fatally shot in Kent at his 21st birthday party | Update

Medical examiner identifies Federal Way killed in early Saturday morning, June 7 shooting on West Hill

A Federal Way man was fatally shot while attending his 21st birthday party Saturday, June 7 at a Kent residence.

Jose Calderon Luis died from a gunshot wound of torso, according to the Tuesday, June 10 King County Medical Examiner’s Office report, which ruled the death a homicide.

Officers responded at about 12:30 a.m. to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 25000 block of 22nd Avenue South on the West Hill, according to a June 7 Kent Police news release. Multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots and believed Luis was still outside the home.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspects had fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Luis had already been transported to a nearby Federal Way hospital by individuals at the residence.

Preliminary information indicates that the shooting occurred during a 21st birthday party being held for Luis, according to police. Uninvited guests reportedly arrived and were asked to leave. An argument and physical altercation reportedly followed, during which shots were fired.

Gunfire struck Luis, who retreated into the home, and collapsed before being transported to the hospital. He later died from his injuries.

Kent detectives responded to the scene to interview witnesses and collect evidence. The investigation is ongoing as detectives work to determine the full sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting and who fired the shots.
