Benjamin Stebbins, a freshman at Kent-Meridian High School, spent a week working as a page for the state Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Benjamin was one of 15 students who served as Senate pages for the first week of the 2017 legislative session.
Stebbins was sponsored by Sen. Joe Fain, aRepublican who represents Auburn, Kent, Covington, Federal Way and Renton in the state Senate.
The Senate Page Program provides the opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.
“You get to see all the offices and how many people are working to keep the state running,” Benjamin said when asked about some of the surprising things he has learned in the Senate Page Program.
Benjamin, 14, enjoys playing video games and socializing with his friends.
He is the son of Janet and Jeffrey Stebbins of Kent.
