Kent’s Lopez Center falls on hard times, in spite of local need; seeking benefactor to assist

A fundraising dinner in December for Kent's Lucy Lopez Center raised nearly $3,000 - something for which Roberto Gonzales, a cofounder of the center, is thankful. "It went wonderful," said Gonzales, seated last month in a booth at his Mexico Lindo restaurant in Kent, and recalling the Dec. 5 Mexican festivities at the Kent Senior Activity Center. "We had about 100 people." But while the assistance is appreciated, it underscores what has become a harsh reality for the nonprofit center. It paid to keep the facility operating for just one month.

King County monitoring Green River flows; minor flooding expected upstream of Auburn

King County officials continue to monitor the Green River Friday for flooding because of rainfall and releases of water from behind the Howard Hanson Dam. But only minor flooding is expected in the lower Mill Creek basin, and in rural areas of the Green River Valley without levees upstream of Auburn, according to King County.

Kent businessman Bobby Dean lands Nashville record deal

Dean, 53, signed a two-year contract in June with Lamon Records of Nashville. Lamon released Dean’s first CD “On the Radio” Jan. 4, including the single “Hank on the Radio.”

Ken Thomas couldn't even legally carry a loaded gun his first few months with the Kent Police Department because he was just 20 years old. "Another officer had to carry my gun to the police academy," Thomas said in a phone interview Wednesday about his police debut in 1989. Twenty-two years later, Mayor Suzette Cooke has named Thomas as Kent's new police chief.
